Superintendent Issues Update on Threat Against MSSD School
From the Dec 9, 2025 e-EditionMcKENZIE (December 3, 2025) — Wednesday afternoon, McKenzie Special School District Superintendent Dr. Justin Barden released a statement regarding a potential verbal threat made by a McKenzie Middle School student. Upon investigation, Homeland Security determined there was no credible threat to the safety of students or to McKenzie Middle School.
Below is a letter from Dr. Barden regarding the incident:
McKenzie Middle School Parents, Students, and Staff,
We are writing to inform you about a situation that was reported late Tuesday evening involving a potential verbal threat made by a MMS student.
The report was initially made to the McKenzie Police Department, who began an immediate investigation, engaging with the student and their family. Based on their investigation, MPD did not determine that a credible threat to the safety of students or the school existed. Homeland Security has been made aware of the reports as well.
Out of an abundance of caution, MMS and district administration continued the investigation this morning. Again, no credible threat to student or school safety was found.
In accordance with Tennessee law, school districts are required to notify families any time law enforcement is contacted in connection with a potential school threat. We want to assure you that the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff remain our top priority. We are grateful to McKenzie PD, Homeland Security, and other local law enforcement partners for their swift response and ongoing collaboration.
We encourage our students, staff, and community members to continue reporting any safety concerns they may have. Sharing concerns quickly allows us to investigate thoroughly and respond appropriately.
Thank you for your continued support in helping keep our school community safe and for your attention to this update.
Respectfully,
Justin Barden
Director of Schools
