Cross Erected on Bethel’s New Chapel

McKENZIE (June 24) — Contractors erected the Christian cross at Bethel University’s new chapel on Monday, June 24. The $4.2 million multi-level project has a seating capacity of 1,058. The finished height of the building should measure approximately 487 feet. It is currently under construction on the McKenzie campus.
McKenzie’s Brett Toombs Awarded McLean-Pedersen Scholarship

PARIS (June 17) — The Paris and Henry County Healthcare Foundation announced Brett Toombs, 2024 graduate of McKenzie High School, as the recipient of the 2024 McLean-Pedersen Endowment Scholarship. Toombs will attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the fall, where she plans to major in Physical Therapy.

Two and a half hours into our journey, while we were traveling on I-840, I glanced at my side mirror to check on traffic and saw one of the wheels on our camper come off and go skittering across the highway.

Intervention without Retention

Tennessee’s new third grade retention law is adding undue stress on parents and grade school children. The new retention law hinges on the English Language Arts section of TCAP / TNReady testing. Third graders who score below or approaching proficiency face possible retention. Students who do not meet the required score on the state test must go to summer school and have a tutor for the entirety of fourth grade. Those students must then hit a specific growth goal the next year to move on to the fifth grade. If a parent believes their child does not need to be held back they can attempt to get an appeal.

Driving on Revoked License — Bennie Harbin, 50, of Huntingdon, was given 10 days to report to the Carroll County Jail for the offense of driving on revoked license first offense. Officer Townes observed Harbin in physical control of a silver Nissan Versa traveling West on Main Street in Huntingdon. Officer Townes knew the driver driver’s license was revoked. She pulled Harbin over and he was cited into General Sessions Court.
