West Carroll Recognizes Student, Faculty

The West Carroll Special School District held its monthly meeting last Thursday, where they recognized Junior Hannah Fowler as she will go through the Tennessee Governor’s School of Agriculture Science at the University of Tennessee at Martin this summer. Fowler will attend a four-week program for high school juniors and seniors to experience various aspects of agriculture and natural resources both in the classroom and through hands-on learning both on and off campus at UTM and will receive three hours college credit.

THP Graduates 49 Troopers

NASHVILLE (April 5) — Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long and Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Colonel Matt Perry welcomed the newest graduating classes of Tennessee State Troopers. The department simultaneously instructed a regular 17-week trooper cadet class and an 11-week lateral trooper cadet class. The lateral class returned from their district assignments for the graduation ceremony that took place at Donelson First in Nashville, Tennessee. Governor Bill Lee served as the keynote speaker during the graduation ceremony and swore in the new troopers as they delivered their oaths of office.

Fireworks Top of McKenzie Agenda

The McKenzie City Council meets Thursday, April 11. On the agenda is an amendment to the Fireworks Ordinance concerning age and purchase times. The purposed sale dates fireworks within the City Limits would be on a seasonal basis from June 20 through July 5 and December 20 through January 1. With an allowance date to shot the fireworks off from June 27 through July 5, and from December 25th through January 1. The fireworks can be shot until 10 p.m., except for December 31st when they shall be allowed until 1:00 a.m. Adding to the amendment is to make it unlawful to sale to children under the age of 18 or to any intoxicated person. The purposed changes will be discussed during at 5:30 p.m. workshop before the Council meeting.

County Commissioner, Spouse Plead Guilty to Felony Theft

HUNTINGDON (April 5) — On Friday, after nearly a year of delays, the case against Carroll County Commissioner William “Lin” Smith, former Carroll County District 8 Fire Chief, and his wife, Malisa “Lisa” Smith, former department treasurer, has come to a close through a plea agreement. The Smiths pled guilty to a Class C Felony for theft over $30,000. According to documents provided by the 24th Judaical Circuit Court, the couple will repay $30,150.86 in restitution to the District 8 Volunteer Fire Department and will receive six years of supervised probation in lieu of jail time. After the probation and if restitution ($418.76 monthly repayment) is met, the felony will be expunged from their criminal record.
