Carroll County Sheriff’s Reports
From the Mar 10, 2026 e-EditionDrug Possession, Evading Arrest Charges — On February 27, Deputy Daniel Thomas was monitoring traffic near Highway 22 when he observed a dark-colored sedan stopped for an extended period at an intersection before entering the highway and traveling north toward Huntingdon. The vehicle repeatedly tapped its brakes and accelerated before making a sudden turn onto Poplar Springs Road.
Deputy Thomas began following the vehicle after observing behavior consistent with possible impaired driving. As the vehicle continued traveling, it accelerated rapidly and appeared to attempt to evade law enforcement. Deputy Thomas activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop.
While approaching the Poplar Springs Road area, the vehicle went airborne and crashed into a nearby field. The driver, identified as Lewis D. Timberlake, 33, of Lexington, exited the vehicle through the passenger-side door and fled on foot across the field while ignoring repeated commands to stop.
During the foot pursuit, the subject continued reaching toward his waistband and made incoherent statements, claiming he had been shot and that people were after him. The pursuit continued approximately 500 feet until the subject entered a creek bed containing thick brush.
Deputy Thomas eventually located the subject lying in the water, attempting to conceal himself while holding an orange pill bottle. The subject was observed placing a blue chalky substance from the bottle into his mouth, appearing to attempt to destroy or conceal possible narcotics. His lips and the inside of his mouth were visibly coated with the substance.
The subject initially resisted being placed in handcuffs before ultimately being taken into custody. EMS was requested due to concerns that he had ingested an unknown substance, but he refused medical evaluation. He was transported to Baptist Hospital in Huntingdon, where he again refused treatment before being taken to the Carroll County Jail.
During the investigation, deputies recovered suspected narcotics and drug-related items from the vehicle and surrounding area. Deputies also located $5,960 in cash near the vehicle. An additional $6,020 in cash was later found on the subject, bringing the total recovered currency to $11,980.

While speaking with the driver, the deputy detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. McHaney admitted there was marijuana inside the vehicle, and a search was conducted.
Deputies located approximately 28 grams of marijuana, a small amount of suspected methamphetamine, a glass pipe containing residue, scales and packaging materials commonly used for narcotics distribution.
